Travel attempts

A lot of articles lately mention Covid-19, which is something I purposely tried to avoid, but how can something that has derailed my plans of not just travel but also material for Lifestylepop not be mentioned. For the third issue now, I have set out to write about one of my favorite cities and even destinations in the world in as much depth as my Tuscany article but have spectacularly failed at it due to my constant travel cancellations.

The marvelous story of my trip to Geneva would cover why I prefer (or if I still do…) Hotel des Bergues to La Reserve (my husband’s preference), which of the worlds high fashion boutiques have the best flagship store in Geneva, report on my very favorite restaurants, including a comparison between two of the most popular Chinese restaurants there, a detailed report on the famous ‘shabu shabu’ served in one of Geneva’s most authentic Japanese restaurants (if you can call it that), and of course my favorite Café du Centre. The wide range of opportunities whether for winter or summer months at a mere hour and half drive from Geneva, such as a ride to the famous Montreux Christmas market or the majestic Lac d’Anessy for walk around the beautiful swan filled canals and grab a delicious lunch overlooking the busy streets. Well… I hate to break it to you, but once again the trip was moved. Unlike the previous two attempts being moved due to the regulations and other difficulties associated with travel in recent years, this time the decision was quite literally taken out of my hands. Two days before my traveling date, I tested positive for Covid-19.

For a moment I thought about foregoing my travel category for this month, due to the circumstances, but after some consideration I decided I cannot rob you of the mind-blowing details of my beautiful trip to my bedroom in utter isolation. Egyptian cotton linens, 4 king and 2 boudoir pillows, freshly brewed tea in a silver thermos on a snow-white wooden bed tray, a small baccarat bowl to hold the demi-citron I squeezed into my tea and manuka honey, and of course an oxygen monitor along with vitamins prescribed by my GP.

All things considered the one symptom nobody reports on is the fear. The very legitimate fear of not making it or ending up hospitalized with as they call it a ‘bad case’. Now even going through the sickness as I write this article, I cannot speak any words of wisdom about how there is nothing to be afraid of, as none of us quite know how this disease will affect us and at which point, even less so can anyone advise others on it. The one thing that is most disquieting in the entire experience is the feeling of being completely alone. Even if one has a strong support system, friends and family who are verbally reassuring, it is the fear of the unknown and the fact that you cannot be seen by a healthcare practitioner and if at any point your symptoms turn towards the worst regardless of the time of night you are on your own until you get to the Covid-19 unit at the general hospital – anything else would be breaking the rules. Anyways given the statistics, most of you reading this have most likely already experienced it and are probably recollecting exactly how you felt (given you followed isolation protocol), and the truth is that no matter how fluffed your pillows, and how hot your tea, and how many trips one can afford to take or skip, health should always be our number one priority. Perhaps this article is better suited to my health & fitness category, but it is a result of a cancelled trip therefore it will remain here. My travel to Covid-19 isolation taught me once again that we are all in this together, no matter what our wrapping. Be healthy and stay strong! xxx
